Tina is one of my best friends from childhood. I love her loads, but hate that she’s been over 6 feet since we were teenagers. Her height used to be a constant reminder that I’m not very tall or thin. Instead of being depressed and hating my friend, I’ve learned a few fashion and styling tricks and tips over the years to help me instantly look taller and slim. With a little styling and fashion help, it is possible to look taller & slimmer.

Looking taller & slimmer is easier to achieve when you have good body posture. Slouching or slumping will give the impression of shortness. In addition to posture, when dressing to look taller & slimmer, you need to remember to be proportionate or well-balanced in your dressing. When you are dressed well proportioned, you will feel & look great, which works wonders for your confidence. To be well proportioned, consider your clothing colour, texture, line and print to ensure you look your slimmest & tallest.

 To Look Taller & Slimmer Wear…

 1. Belts

Belts divide your body and break up that long, lengthening vertical line you get when you don’t wear belts. Since a belt divides the body, if you want to look taller and slimmer, avoid wearing belts. But if you really want to wear a belt, choose to wear a narrow one that’s the same colour as the rest of your clothing. This encourages the illusion of a long, unbroken, vertical line.

2. Cropped Jackets

Cropped or shorter jackets worn by shorter ladies will give the illusion of longer legs. Wearing vertical lines will encourage the eyes to look up & down, furthering the illusion of length and height.

3. Dark Colours

Dark colours are slimming because dark colours absorb light, so they regress into the background. Brighter, or lighter colours reflect light, so they shine & pop into the foreground. Dark neutrals like black, forest green and navy blue are very versatile and are also easy to accessorise.

4. Hair

The shorter your hair, the slimmer & taller you will appear. This is because a visible neck lengthens your entire body. So, if you want to appear slimmer and taller, it’s important to avoid wearing baggy/bulky items like wool around your neck. If you do have longer hair, wearing it up and off your shoulders is best to elongate your neck. Avoid making your upswept hair short and wide. The higher the hair, the taller and slimmer the effect.

5. High Heels

Thanks for stating the obvious, right? Despite this being so obvious, you may avoid heels because they may be uncomfortable or impractical for your busy lifestyle. However, you don’t need an 8-inch heel to get more height. Even a little heel helps. Especially if it is a pointy-toed heel in a nude colour. All these factors help to elongate your legs making you appear taller and slimmer. If you must wear a coloured shoe, an open-toed heel works better than a rounded tip for elongating your legs.

6. Monochrome Colours

Dressing in the same colour all over is called monochromatic dressing. It is a great way to look slimmer and taller. Dressing in one colour displays one long vertical line that has no breaks. This instantly elongates your figure which makes you appear taller & slimmer. Make your line as long as possible by wearing the same colour from head to toe. Avoid wearing many different colours together. This sections your body and makes you look shorter and wider. Instead, dress in the same colour all over or in harmonious colours from the same colour family, like reds, burgundies, maroons and so on. Don’t be scared that dressing in the same colour all over can be boring. Simply add an accessory for creativity & intrigue.

7. Pants/Trousers

To give an elongated, slimming effect, pants/trousers should be long and flowing to the top of your feet, with a high waist. This effect instantly elongates your legs. Avoid pants/trousers that have cuffs at the hem. Cuffs make you look shorter because they break the pant leg line. Stay clear of pants/trousers that end in the middle, or three-quarters of your calf. If you want a more elongated look, it’s pointless wearing pants/trousers that cut your calves in half.

8. Shirts/Tops

Wear V neck shirts/tops to display your neck. Remember, a visible neck lengthens. Select tops that are not too big/baggy/long, if you want to look taller & slimmer. Also, to create the illusion of length and height, be sure to tuck in your tops. Long, untucked tops and shirts shorten the whole body, by making your legs look shorter than they actually are. To avoid this, make sure your shirts/tops are always above your hips.  

9. Thin Fabrics

For instant height and slimness, wear thin fabrics that are not too clingy or very textured. Avoid wearing anything made from bulky, chunky, or stiff fabrics. These types of fabrics create width and will always make you look shorter and bulkier than you actually are. Big baggy clothing makes you look boxy and short. Tailored clothing made from thin fabrics is always more slimming and lengthening.

10. Vertical Lines

Vertical lines cause a fashionable, lengthening and slimming effect. They encourage the eyes up and down to instantly make you look taller & slimmer. In addition to vertical stripes, long zips, long scarves, rows of buttons, or anything that makes a long line vertically create a slimming & lengthening effect. So does a long opened jacket with monochromatic colours underneath.
