My close friend Shiela told me that this year one of her goals is to have healthier makeup habits and asked if I had any advice for her. Shiela’s skincare routine is almost non-existent, so I made sure to tell her that good makeup habits always begin with great skincare. She admitted that in the past, she was guilty of loads of bad skincare and makeup decisions. Does Shiela sound like you or anyone you know? If so, then here are 5 fantastic tips on how to have healthy skincare & makeup habits.

These tips are amazing for healthy skin and also for makeup habits. However, if you’re not a makeup lover, you should also  read my related posts

Good Skincare & Makeup Habit #1: Avoid Alcohol Based Skincare Products

I’m referring to bad alcohols such as isopropyl alcohol, which is usually found in toners that are made for oily skin.  These terrible alcohols may strip the skin of its natural protective oils and adversely affect the skin’s ph balance. Consequently, these bad alcohols may cause your skin to produce more oils rapidly in an effort to compensate for the natural oils that were lost. So, it’s always best to check the labels before purchasing. Boots has some amazing alcohol-free skincare products that work wonders. Be sure to check them out. Your skin will be glad you did!

On the other hand, fatty alcohols, such as cetyl or stearyl, are fine if found in your cosmetics. These types of alcohols bond with other makeup ingredients together make the product smooth and spread effectively.

Good Skincare & Makeup Habit #2: Shun Soiled Sponges

There are few things I find more disgusting than dirty makeup sponges. Soiled makeup sponges are ideal for bacteria to breed. This can then easily spread to the other contents of your makeup bag/kit and jeopardise your facial skin and overall wellbeing.  No one wants a face full of blemishes, breakouts and blotches. This can be critical to your confidence and cripple your self-esteem. Therefore, to continue being your beautiful, confident self, it’s important to avoid overusing the same makeup sponges. It’s best to dump the sponge when it begins to look like the same colour as your makeup.

Good Skincare & Makeup Habit #3: Don’t Overuse Makeup Wipes

Life can be really hectic. Amongst all the chaos and clutter, it may seem simple, quick and easy to grab a makeup wipe at the end of the day to remove your makeup. However, if this is done daily, it may do more harm than good.

While makeup wipes are convenient, they do not clean the skin thoroughly and often leave harmful residue that can clog your pores and cause breakouts. Also, removing eye makeup with wipes can cause eyelash damage that nobody wants.

Instead of using makeup wipes religiously, use them sparingly when absolutely necessary. Using makeup wipes daily is not the best option for good skincare, not for the environment.

Good Skincare & Makeup Habit #4: Curl First, Mascara Second

Your lovely, long, lashes frame your alluring eyes and can really make your face stand out for all the right reasons…but only if they are well taken care of. Using mascara and curling your lashes to enhance them is always advisable. However, the best way to avoid lash loss and/ damage to your lashes is to curl your natural lashes first, then apply your mascara. This way you can have lovely, long, healthy lashes for years to come. Try this amazing mascara that’s great value for money because it’s buy 1 get 2nd 1/2 price.

The advantage of this is that they can constantly improve products and come up with ingenious items to make us look and feel great. The disadvantage is that “all that glitters is not gold” and many of the marking that we see and hear nowadays make empty promises about being the answer to all your skincare and beauty prayers.
