How to keep it simple, yet elegant, this Christmas

My grandmother used to always say, “There’s elegance in simplicity.” Based on this, I’ve learned that as a busy mom, simple styles can be life savers. There’s no need to sacrifice the glamour, sparkle and shine that’s synonymous with this holiday season when you can keep it simple in the following ways.

  1. Balance – An elegant, yet simple outfit for the holiday season has to be balanced. For instance, if you’re small on top and want to accentuate that area, then wear a sparkly/eye-catching top. Conversely, if you want to highlight your lower half, you can draw attention to that area with a sequinced skirt. Usually, you can achieve balance by remembering that, if you wear sparkle on top, wear something with less bling at the bottom and vice versa.
  2. Sparkle – Wearing a reasonable amount of sparkle during the holiday season is encouraged. But don’t go overboard with the sparkle from head to toe. You don’t want to look like a walking disco ball.
  3. Textures & Knitwear – The weather is colder during the winter months, even if you live in warm climates. Therefore, textures and knitwear are ideal because they can be glamourous and also warm, and comfortable. Sparkly textured sweaters/jumpers are practical and gorgeous, so stay warm and still be stylish this season. Why not try a black sweater/jumper? Black is a beautiful basic, so it can be paired with almost anything. Wearing it with an elegant sequin skirt/trousers/pants will give you an extra bit of sparkle and super star style. If black isn’t your preference, try a gorgeous seasonal colour that you’re more comfortable with.

You can complete any outfit with a gorgeous pair of head turning ankle boots. I know many moms who love how practical and stunning ankle boots can be. However, they are afraid of how they make their legs and feet look. Have no fear, momma! Here are a few tips to help you step out in style this holiday season.

If you’re not careful, ankle boots can unintentionally cause your feet and legs to look thicker and larger than you’d like, especially when wearing a dress/skirt. Ankle boots are known to make legs looked chopped off. For a flattering look, it’s important to pay attention to where the boot line is at your ankle. A boot that has a straight line is less flattering than one that scoops/slants at the front. The straight line increases the chopping effect, so it should be avoided at all costs.

You can avoid looking like your legs are chopped by remembering these tips:

  1. Toe Shape. A pointed toe ankle boot is excellent for elongating your legs and feet, especially if you think your calves are too thick. Remember that a rounded toe will widen your foot and cause it to look heavier than it actually is. This is fine for you if you have small feet or very slim legs. The round toe will thicken your legs and feet and help balance out your look and shape your legs.
  1. To get a lighter/thinner look in your ankle boots, a thinner heel is best.
  1. Wear the same colour clothing on your legs as the boots. For instance, if you’re wearing black leggings/tights, then a black pair of ankle boots would be ideal.
  1. Ankle boots made of suede should be avoided. Suede absorbs light and will make your feet look larger than they may actually be.
  1. Ankle boots made of leather are perfect for reflecting light. Reflected light makes your feet look smaller. So, if you want your feet to look sleeker/slimmer, then leather is a great go-to.

This holiday season, ankle boots are an excellent accessory to complete your chic outfit. Just remember to choose an ankle boot that works for you and enhances your finer features. If it makes you look and feel great, then go for it! Treat yourself or a loved one to a new pair of amazing ankle boots during the holidays.

It’s customary to buy treats for yourself and loved ones during the holidays, especially clothes. Sometimes these purchases are necessary, other times, they are impulse buys that end up hardly ever being used. During Christmas, it’s not unusual for us to just give in to the insane marketing and media that target us from every direction.

Buying new clothes and accessories will always be necessary, but buying in excess can become costly and impractical over time. I know you don’t want to sacrifice your style at the expense of minimalism. So I’ve put together a few tips to help you get through this holiday season without broking the bank, yet looking stylish and fleek.

2. Know where you will wear the item

Before buying, at least have an idea of where and when the item will be worn. Will you repeatedly get your money’s worth out of it? Or, is it a once in a lifetime event or occasion that after wearing once, the garment or accessory will never see the light of day or the glow of night again?  Be also mindful of not purchasing clothing and accessories with the hope of a perfect future in mind. You don’t want to be disappointed and then your purchases go to waste and cause you to be depressed. For instance, it may not be the best idea to buy that size 0 outfit now, with the belief that it will motivate you to lose those extra pounds. Wait until you’ve lost the weight, then treat yourself. Also, don’t be tempted to buy that dress, hoping that you’ll be invited to that party/special occasion. Wait until you get the invitation then splurge on yourself.  If you keep buying things with the hope of wearing them in the future if and when something happens, you may end up with a closet full of clothing and accessories with nowhere to go. How sad is that?

3. Buy based on needs, not wants

When shopping for clothing and accessories, it’s best to know what you need and focus on those purchases first. Make a list of what’s missing from your closet and replenish those items before treating yourself to a random/impulse buy.  Your list should help you focus when shopping. This should cause you to make better buying decisions and buy items that flatter your figure and which you can enjoy and appreciate for ages.

4. Bargains are brilliant, only if they’re necessary

Who doesn’t love a good sale or bargain prices? However, so-called bargains can quickly become expensive mistakes if you do not need the items you buy. Think of how much money you’ll be able to save if you ignored the impulse to purchase clothing and accessories this Christmas, based solely on the attractive sale price. If you need the item, of course you should grab the great deal. However, if the special deal/offer is the only factor in your decision making process, then move on, momma. Inevitably this so-called bargain will be a waste of time, money and closet space.

5. What can I wear it with?

Before buying an item, consider what you will wear it with that you already own. If you just can’t pair it with other items already in your closet then it may not be the best buy this season. Try to combine the item(s) you’re about to buy with at least 2-3 other items or accessories in your wardrobe. If it works then great. Grab this deal. If you’re struggling to incorporate this item into your wardrobe, then you should keep looking.

Now that you know how to buy less clothes, save money and still be stylish this Christmas, you may want to glam things up with more sparkle and shine throughout the holidays. Being glamourous doesn’t mean you need to abandon your favourite items of clothing. Many of my friends love their comfy, practical, versatile jeans.
